Kurzführung in der Sonderausstellung «Die Welt ins Museum. Vom Handeln, Sammeln und Entdecken»

Kultur über Mittag: Die Welt ins Museum. Vom Handeln, Sammeln und Entdecken, Kurzführung in der Ausstellung, (ca. 30 Minuten).

Handelsleute aus der Ostschweiz suchten im 19. Jahrhundert neue Absatzmärkte, sammelten Vorlagen für die Textilindustrie, typische Handelswaren, Alltagsgegenstände und kulturelle Artefakte. Sie waren Teil des globalen Marktes und der kolonialen Infrastruktur. Sie entdeckten und erlebten aussereuropäische Länder und Kulturen. In St.Gallen waren sie seit 1878 in einer Gesellschaft verbunden, die sich für geografische Bildung und Handelsinteressen einsetzte. In der Kantonsschule richtete sie ein Handelsmuseum ein. Handeln, Sammeln, Entdecken sind die Stichworte der neuen Ausstellung, welche die Anfänge der ethnologischen Sammlung in St.Gallen beleuchtet und die Vorgeschichte des heutigen Kulturmuseums.
