The medieval town of La Neuveville on Lake Biel has something for the whole family to enjoy, from an easy three-hour walk packed with tales of witches to the lake shore and colourful old town.
The four-kilometre Witches’ Trail starts and ends at the railway station in La Neuveville. The first information board shows the route of the circular hike. We recommend taking the path up to the vineyards of La Neuveville, so that the legendary
waterfall with its “Witches’ Bathtub” then follows as the crowning highlight.
After the steep ascent through the vineyards, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the town, Lake Biel and St. Peter’s Island. The trail leads from one information panel to the next, following picturesque paths through idyllic natural surroundings. If you need to, recharge your batteries in the forest picnic area and take in some wonderful views. On the Witches’ Trail, hikers not only find out more about the secrets of La Neuvevillle but also learn about the hidden powers of medicinal plants, trees, stones and water.
Hidden behind dense trees is the legendary waterfall, at the bottom of which the local witches are said to have bathed. Even today, you can cool off in the knee-deep clear water of the stone basin. The path continues down past vineyards, stately houses with enchanting gardens and along the shores of Lake Biel back into the town.
