Museum Franz Gertsch
Overview
Intro
Opened in 2002, the museum is dedicated to the works of the renowned Swiss artist Franz Gertsch. But the museum itself is an extraordinary building - more than worth a visit, if only to admire the architecture.
Born in Mörigen in the canton of Berne in1930, Franz Gertsch is one of Switzerland's leading contemporary artists - who made himself a name far and wide through his monumental photo-realistic woodcutting and paintings. Since his international breakthrough in "documenta 5" in Kassel in 1972 until today, Gertsch has created a rich collection of pictorial and graphic arts. The collection housed in the centrally located museum in Burgdorf includes works by Franz Gertsch from the years from 1984 until today; with changing exhibitions, held here on a regular basis, presenting a wide range of additional contemporary art.
It was in 1998 that the Burgdorf industrialist Willy Michel came up with the idea of constructing and furnishing a jointly supported museum together with Franz Gertsch. Thereafter, in close collaboration with Franz Gertsch, the Emmental architects Hans Jörg Ueli and Martin Sturm were to create the striking and functional design so fit for the exhibited works. An ArtCafé seating 50 and video lounge, in which a documentary on the life of Franz Gertsch is viewed during the day, is also open to visitors.
