La Chaux-de-Fonds Bike
Overview
Intro
From the heart of the watchmaking industry this tour leads up to the magnificent hills of the Jura and across lovely meadows, down into Vallée de La Sagne and the long ribbon of the town with the same name. The single trail through the forest on the other side of the valley, down from Mont-Dar, is an experience.
Description
The cityscape of La-Chaux-de-Fonds (1000 m) looks like a huge chessboard. Due to the linear arrangement of the wide roads the watchmakers had a great deal of light, their most important tool. Because of its exceptional construction style the city together with adjacent Le Locle was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour starts at the train station in the town centre and continues north across the famous “Pod” (Avenue Léopold-Robert), which is a relatively busy road.
The ascent to Combe des Roulets is much more peaceful and leads to the first highlight: the “Le Communal” Jura region with meadows extending along the Vallée de La Sagne like a carpet. The trail follows the pastures for more than 5 km, passing scattered and groups of majestic spruce trees. Not surprisingly, hundreds of people come here to enjoy a picnic in the beautiful landscape, especially on sunny Sundays. As soon as the forest becomes denser, the trail branches off down to La Sagne. You can cross it in the blink of an eye because La Sagne is a typical ribbon-built village, about 2.5 km long, with groups of buildings along the road through the high valley. It is actually one of the longest villages in Switzerland.
The mountain bikers now follow the Quignets creek to Mont-Dar with its beautifully situated restaurant. By the way, this is also a good place to visit in winter because it is right in the heart of the cross-country skiing network of the Neuchâtel Jura. From the highest point of the tour the trail leads down into the forest. The “Chemin des Corbeaux” is a lovely single trail, but the roots may be slippery here, depending on the weather. A last uphill zigzag after La Corbatière and back it goes to the city centre.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
