Loipe Lindenberg
Overview
Intro
Since 1971 there have been cross-country ski runs for all levels on the Lindenberg, around 850 metres above sea level. As it is usually above the sea of fog, the Horben ski run provides a panoramic view from the canton of Zug to the Rigi mountain and beyond to the Alps and their foothills.
Description
As soon as the ski-run vehicle starts working on the Horben, it is time for cross-country skiers to strap their skis on. Beginners can warm up on a short practice section (1.4 km). The longest ski run, which takes you into the neighbouring canton of Lucerne, is the one over the Lindenberg. The elongated ridge is easily accessible making it a popular recreation area for the Freiamt area, the Seetal valley and the canton of Zug.
A further highlight: the panorama above the sea of fog. This is a sight cross-country skiers will see as soon as they have completed the first climb over the fields: the panorama takes in the upper Freiamt area and extends to the Rigi and Titlis mountains. The run continues past an old farm – sticking to the edge of the wood. If you want to enjoy the view again, you have to turn back and go down towards the restaurant. Ambitious skiers can take the branch of the run that heads towards the Lindenberg. Several sections of the Horben ski run go through the wood where the snow-covered trees provide the perfect winter setting.
The run starts and finishes at the Alpwirtschaft Horben on the south-eastern side of the ridge, not far from Horben Castle. The building dates back to the 18th century and is a popular destination and national treasure. It was once a place of relaxation for the monks of the Muri monastery who wanted to unwind in the seclusion of the Lindenberg.
