Intro
On this winter hiking trail, you can escape the fog and enjoy the mystical mood in the open landscape of the upland moor, the largest in Switzerland. It lies in a high valley where the Biber river flows in its natural bed.
Description
The village of Rothenthurm with its upland moor, home to a rich variety of rare animals and plants, is known mainly as a summer destination. But a walk over the high plateau also offers many pleasures in winter – peaceful seclusion, a landscape of peat bogs, mountain pines and birches and the icicles on the banks of the Biber. The trail is almost completely flat and you'll only share the expanse of the moor with other ramblers and cross-country skiers.
It's just a short walk from the railway station to the upland moor. On the way, you'll see the typical huts that were once used to dry extracted peat and, further away, hills covered with forests; the plain is bordered by the Höhronen, the Morgartenberg and the hill range including the Katzenstrick Pass. When you return to the village on the same path, your eye will be drawn to the Letzi tower with its distinctive red roof. It was built in 1323 and gave the village its name, though the locals simply know it as «Türa».
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
