Turren–Schönbüel Trail
Overview
Intro
The remote Usseri Alp area, the superbly situated Bärghuis Schönbüel and the sleepy Alpine village of Breitenfeld – all this is enough to provide a unique hike circuit trail experience.
Description
With its elevated start/finish at Turren mountain restaurant (1550 metres above sea level), this trail frequently offers a view out across a sea of fog. After enjoying the view down into the Lungern valley basin, you make your way along the snow-covered Alpine trail around Finsterbüel. At Chuematt the winter hiking trail and snowshoe paths separate. The latter leads along the Mühlimäs plateau and circles the steep Lauibach ravine.
Before long, the extensive Usseri Alp allows a leisurely climb up to the Tüfengrat ridge. Together with the Scheidegg, this forms the cantonal border between Obwalden and Bern. At the lowest point there is an impressive view of Lake Brienz. The snowshoes trail now makes a broad eastward arc through a white arena leading up to Bärghuis Schönbüel (2020 metres above sea level), which can be seen from a distance. After the last steep climb, it is time for a well-earned rest.
The path then runs back along the former ski piste through the picturesque village of Breitenfeld, which in summer provides catering for one of Obwalden's most attractive and biggest high Alpine areas. During the descent it is worth taking a final breather near the Lueg, which was once a strategic look-out and signalling point during medieval border disputes.
