Vierwaldstättersee Kanu
Overview
Intro
Leave Rotschuo bay and paddle alongside the sunny southern slopes of the Rigi towards Brunnen, where the establishment and development of the Swiss Confederation once began. En route, the natural beaches of Central Switzerland's Riviera invite you to linger for a while.
Description
The third and final stage on Lake Lucerne sets off from Rotschuo with its hostel and little landing stage. You can also see as far as Gersau in the canton of Schwyz: this holiday resort is nestled in a hollow on the sunny south face of Mount Rigi, shielded from the wind. Thanks to its unique location, it benefits from lush vegetation and a mild climate. Up until the 19th century, it was only possible to reach Gersau by boat or via the Gätterli Pass. From the 15th century until 1817, it was a small free republic, before being made into a part of the canton of Schwyz – involuntarily at the time. Nowadays, Gersau can aptly be described as a “lakeside gem” with various cultural and culinary attractions. It is possible to disembark at the Wehri boat ramp and at Gersau Kurpark.
Proceed along the beautiful shoreline towards Brunnen. Depending on the water level, there are multiple bathing beaches, ranging from larger to smaller in size, where you can take a break along the way. You can stop at the idyllic Kindli lido too, near the chapel of the same name where you will find the landing stage.
Shortly before you reach Brunnen, you will encounter Marina Fallenbach and, right beside it, Hopfräben lido and the nature conservation area of the same name. On account of its diversity of flora and fauna, it is a fen of national importance.
The name Brunnen comes from the Middle High German word “bron/bronnen”, meaning spring. The spring in question rises on the plain uphill from the village, gathering into the Leewasser stream which flows into Lake Lucerne. As a gateway to the north-south link provided by the Gotthard Pass, Brunnen was a major harbour and port of loading for trade with Ticino and Italy until 1865. Since the construction of the Axenstrasse, Brunnen has become a tourism hotspot with a unique location as the gateway to Lake Uri. The lakeside promenade with its panoramic views is impressive too. What’s more, it has plenty of places to sit – the perfect way to wind down after a hard day’s canoeing.
