Intro

The Uferpark recreational area on the outskirts of Solothurn invites old and young alike to linger, relax and enjoy themselves. With a wide bike path, a promenade for those out for a stroll, barbecue areas complete with wooden benches, as well as windows to nature with access to the Aare river and a beach, who could ask for more?

At the heart of the new Uferpark is what used to be the canteen for the Attisholz cellulose factory back in 1881. The former sewage treatment plant is another reminder of the area’s industrial history. The now moss-covered stone walls that separate the treatment plant’s pools have been retained – but stairs and passageways have been added that connect the individual pools to one another. A lot of graffiti appeared here, trees were planted, and a playground built. Other pools have been deliberately left empty, in order to free up space for creative pursuits and various other uses.

Plenty of room has also been left for nature to do its thing, to encourage a greater variety of species in this area. In the water, little islands have been created using gravel and blocks of stone, allowing flora and fauna to thrive.
