The AQUATIS Aquarium-Vivarium Lausanne at a glance
The AQUATIS is the largest freshwater aquarium vivarium in Europe. On 3,500 square metres, 46 aquariums, vivariums and terrariums show 20 ecosystems from 5 continents. The 2-storey tour takes you through habitats from the Rhône, Amazon and Nile to African lakes.
What to experience
Freshwater World Walking Tour (1.5–2 hours)
Start in the European Rhône region and travel on to Africa, Asia, Oceania and America. You will observe piranhas, crocodiles, Komodo dragons and thousands of fish species in lifelike habitats. A plexiglass tunnel leads you through the middle of the large aquarium in the centre.
- Good to know: Children under 5 years old can enter for free.
- Tip: Buy tickets online in advance to avoid waiting times.
Visit the breeding station (20-30 minutes)
In the breeding station, they get a look behind the scenes. You will see how young animals are cared for and raised. Information boards explain the breeding programmes for endangered species such as the Komodo dragon or the European pond turtle. This detour is particularly worthwhile for families with children.
- Good to know: The breeding station is located on the regular tour.
Explore the Tropical Hall
The 533-square-metre tropical hall is the highlight of the tour. Here, you'll move through a recreated Amazon landscape filled with tropical plants, frogs, turtles and caimans. Digital animations complement animal and plant observation and make the interrelationships of the rainforest ecosystem easy to understand.
- Good to know: It is warm and humid in the tropical hall.
- Tip: You can take a break in the picnic area halfway through.
