In the middle of the city of Bern is the Botanical Garden of the University of Bern. 5500 plant species invite you on a botanical journey around the globe: From the hot tropics, the Central Asian steppes to the spicy-scented Mediterranean region or the shady forests of East Asia to the cool Alpine air.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Bern, located right next to the Aare, makes the hearts of friends of botany and flora beat faster. Visitors encounter a wide variety of plants from all over the world, including medicinal plants, numerous native species, but also a variety of exotic flowers, shrubs and trees.
During a walk through the heart of the garden, the Alpinum, which leads from the Pyrenees to the Alps, the Balkans and the Caucasus to the Himalayas and the Rocky Mountains, over 1500 plant species alone adorn the path. On a journey through local climes, you will gain an insight into the diverse Swiss flora, get to know rare species and feel transported to the dreamy mountain world without further ado.
Six show houses are home to plants from different climate zones. In addition to the Mediterranean Sea and the steppe regions orchids, palm trees, ferns and succulents each have their own building. Especially in the pleasantly warm Palm House, the rainforest can be experienced with all the senses. With a bit of luck, the trained explorer's eye will spot beautifully coloured butterflies or a ripening pineapple fruit.
