Since March 2021, the St. Gallen bratwurst from the traditional Gemperli takeaway stand at Schmiedgasse 34 has had an exotic companion: the colourful poke bowl.
Over lunch, for a snack or before a concert: the Gemperli takeaway stand is well-known for its delicious bratwurst. Without mustard, of course – a point of principle in this city! For the residents of St. Gallen, life without the Gemperli stand doesn’t bear thinking about. It is part of what gives St. Gallen its sense of identity, like FC St. Gallen, the Abbey and the Drei Weieren ponds.
Since March 2021, the takeaway stand has undergone a transformation and had a facelift: the interior is now brighter, with a great atmosphere. It is reminiscent of Hawaii, where the “poke” (fish salad) originated. As ever, you can still order your bratwurst at the takeaway stand, but you can now also opt for a poke bowl. In recent years, these bowls have become very popular throughout Switzerland – including at Gemperli. The colourful poke bowls are intended to bring variety to the range of takeaway foods and to appeal to a wider audience. If you are trying a poke bowl for the first time, it is probably best to try one of the five ready-prepared signature bowls. Then you only have to make one decision, which of the intriguingly named dishes to choose: Atuna Matata, Uhh Mami Salmon, Planted Chicken Run, Hot Meat Pot or Bubba Shrimps.
Those in the know can put together their own bowl to taste using the building block principle: First choose the base: either sushi rice, quinoa, riso venere or couscous. Then add protein in the form of fish, beef, chicken, prawns or tofu, and four vegetable or fruit toppings such as cucumber, pineapple, mango, avocado or edamame beans. Next comes your choice of sauce, and finally two garnishes, such as ginger, pomegranate or jalapeños. If you prefer to make your decision in peace and study the ingredients in more detail, you can also compile a poke bowl online and collect it from Schmiedgasse.
Under this new concept, sausage lovers still get to enjoy their beloved traditional Gemperli takeaway stand, but it is simultaneously moving with the times with the new poke bowl menu.
