Music on Karl Johan Street
The Kunsthaus Zurich has one of the most important groups of works by the artist Edvard Munch. In its style of painting, "Music on Karl Johan Street" initially appears to be related to the street pictures by the French Impressionists. But unlike Monet or Manet, Munch is not interested in the dynamics of an anonymous mass of people. The perspective leads us from the looming figures in the foreground to the crowd pressed against the houses, with military music creating a street scene of strange and disconcerting emptiness.
