Gustave Courbet, who found refuge in Switzerland after the events in the Place Vendôme, was sensitive to the beauty and power of this country's natural Alpine landscape, and he took it as the subject of numerous works. His painting of this Alpine panorama shows the massifs of the Dents du Midi and the Grammont. This was the view he saw from the terrace of the house known as "Bon-Port" in La Tour-de-Peilz, the village where he chose to live, and where he died in 1877.
