A breathtaking Baroque city trip. Enjoying the finer things in life in Solothurn.
Intro
Solothurn is more than a destination for a short city break. It has the same range as a large town – just on a more compact scale. The old town with its charming little lanes and authentic boutiques is not only a shopping experience for the ladies. Anyone who loves historical sights and cafes by the water will also be in their element here.
Solothurn
Solothurn is considered to be the most beautiful Baroque town in Switzerland, combining Italian grandeur with French charm, as well as the down-to-earth attitude of those in German-speaking Switzerland. The so-called “ambassador city” is in the southern foothills of the Jura, right on the River Aare.
The (shopping) adventure begins
Solothurn is the perfect choice for a trip with your closest friends. Countless little boutiques, short paths, hip cafes and restaurants as well as tourist highlights provide the best ingredients for this. Start in the heart of the town, at the imposing St. Ursus Cathedral.
Coffee and croissants
Before the day really gets going, start it off with a coffee and a croissant. In the cafes and bakeries, the staff make time for their customers, which often leads to a spontaneous friendly chat.
An atmospheric shopping paradise
You can also strike up conversation while strolling through the old town or shopping in Solothurn’s very diverse and distinctive stores. You can find small boutiques such as Lila Schöne Dinge, Kerzenjäger, as well as plenty of fashion stores, all fitting into a compact space. This Baroque town is a wonderful location for shopping in the open air. On Saturday mornings, the market offers fresh natural produce and serves as a meeting place for visitors and locals alike.
Art in a natural setting.
Solothurn Fine Arts Museum is the ideal meeting place for culture enthusiasts. It not only houses a superb permanent collection, but it also constantly surprises visitors with top-notch exhibitions. Even if you don’t go inside, at least take a look at the beautiful park surrounding the museum. A fountain sculpture by Roman Signer lies at the heart of this green oasis.
A taste of summer by the Aare
The streets are short in Solothurn. And they always wind through picturesque lanes to idyllic squares. And down to the water, to the River Aare. The river lends the town a real feeling of savoir-vivre. Some people even like to say that Solothurn is on the sea. To see the region from the water, take a boat trip from Solothurn and cruise past the stork village of Altreu to Biel/Bienne.
But to return to the banks of the Aare in Solothurn… On fine summer days, the “Solothurn Riviera” serves as a meeting place for “all of Solothurn”. An aperitif by the water is the perfect way to wind down at the end of the day.
