Basel’s harbour north of the city in the area known as the “Three Countries Corner”

This is where the borders of France, Germany and Switzerland meet. The area is predominately an industrial district and port, which in recent years has seen a barrage of street artists and other creative types using it as their own personal playground. It's also where multimedia artist Permi Jhooti has her studio.

Art created from data

Permi Jhooti's studio is located on Ostquai, a creative space that also hosts events directly on Basel's harbour. But rather than paint and canvas. Jhooti’s studio is filled with computers, cables and high-tech gadgetry.

In the middle there is a Microsoft Kinect movement detector which turns movement into digital data. Jhooti distorts and transforms the data into richly coloured projections and videos which often interact with the viewer’s movements. Or to put it more simply: she creates art using digital data.

Just a few years ago, Permi Jhooti would have never dreamed that art would become one of her biggest passions. Born in London to Indian immigrants, Jhooti's life story became world-famous when director Gurinder Chadha used it as the basis for her hit film “Bend It Like Beckham”.

The film tells the story of a young woman with Indian roots who dreams of having a successful career as a footballer. Despite all the obstacles and misgivings of her family, the film's hero goes on to become England's first Asian female pro footballer.

Jhooti has called Basel home since 2005. Originally she worked here in the IT industry in cardiac research. Some key encounters in the Basel art scene, particularly with ballet and dance, led her to discover her love of art.

I never thought I would become an artist. But Basel just offered me this wonderful opportunity.

Basel – an open-air living room.

Before coming to Basel, Jhooti spent a long time living in London

And at first she missed the city where she was born. But these days she is happy to call Basel home. Basel has everything a global city can offer, but in a more manageable size. One example is the Rheingasse, where Jhooti can often be found. Everyone in Basel passes through here. It's where life is lived out on the street, especially in summer. You sit outside and chat with people you know who are passing by.

And because sooner or later everyone passes this way, meeting all kinds of new people –architects, artists, musicians, dancers or scientists – is so very simple. It's a veritable incubator for new ideas and projects. Jhooti had never experienced this in any other city.

Rheingasse is like a little village in the middle of the city where everyone knows everyone else. I’d never experienced anything like this before coming to Basel.

Entertainment programme included

This open-air living room comes complete with the best entertainment. There are numerous events and festivals in the summer, many of which are free. One of these is the Imfluss Festival where the musicians are on a floating stage on the Rhine. This evokes a pleasant memory.

A few years ago in the summer of 2012, she had an important appointment in London. Then she heard that her favourite band from her student days, Saint Etienne, was going to be playing at Imfluss. She postponed her appointment until the next day and got to see her favourite band play practically on her doorstep.

The best thing about the Imfluss Festival is that it's in the middle of the river in the heart of the city. And the river is the heart of Basel.

Jhooti's days as a professional athlete are long gone. But in Basel she discovered a new sport she loves: paddleboarding on the Rhine. Although she's not a fan of water, paddleboarding has become one of her favourite pastimes.

Relaxing on the Rhine

Every time she heads downriver on her SUP, she feels utterly content and carefree. And each time she gets to discover a completely new aspect of the city on the river. But the best part comes at the end. As a reward, she has a drink at one of Basel’s many “buvettes”, the outdoor bars found along the banks of the Rhine.

Living in Basel is like being on an endless holiday. This is one of the reasons why I never leave to go on holidays in the summer.
