"City country river poet"
KUNZ is back! And he's coming to the people with a guitar case full of stories. As "Stadt Land Fluss Poet", the Lucerne dialect musician presents eleven brand new songs. After a long journey with his two older children - Japan, South Korea, Indonesia - and before he and his wife became parents of twins, the multiple "Swiss Music Award" and "Prix Walo" winner has produced his seventh studio album.
He doesn't know exactly how he found the time: "It happened on the fly, so to speak," says KUNZ with a laugh. And perhaps this is precisely why "Stadt Land Fluss Poet" is such a hit: because here is someone in the middle of life and he succeeds in reflecting this in his songs. "I sing whenever I have something to say, as a friend or a clown, as a father and a mother," says the title song.
A poet of everyday life, a singer-songwriter who tells true stories. And his art lies precisely in the way he attaches meaning to the little things. The songs are about falling in love, crazy family events and funny annoyances. About things we all know ... For example, when you meet old acquaintances but can't quite remember their first names. Reports from real life. "Everyone has a story," says KUNZ, "every little person is 'the world' for someone." He captures this beautifully in "Die ganzi Wäut", a quietly touching duet with Anna Känzig.
The master of dialect folk tries to make a rhyme with the present by looking 99 years back and 99 years ahead. And asks himself whether we can still hope. The twins were born almost a century after their great-grandmother was born. "Even back then, people had the feeling that the world was coming to an end," says KUNZ. "And if my job is just to give people a little hope and encourage them to keep their faith, then that's fine."
Sometimes the tracks are arranged as sparsely instrumented Americana-style ballads, sometimes as driving pop anthems. At their core, they are always convincing as narrative songs. As wonderful declarations of love to existence. Is it okay to counter the misery of the world with euphoric pop songs? You have to, says KUNZ. He doesn't close his mind to the problems: "We have to see the dangers, but we can also celebrate life as it is."
Here, someone challenges us to embrace the beauty: "S Glöck, das isch flöchtig, umarms, wenns du hesch!" He does it with infectious joie de vivre. That is strong. Because optimism is not for the faint-hearted.
