Heiligabend in Paris: In einer ungeheizten Mansarde sitzen vier junge Künstlerfreunde mit leeren Mägen – arm, aber voller Witz und Lebenslust. Da lernt Rodolfo die lungenkranke Nachbarin Mimi kennen. Einzig die sofort aufflammende Liebe zwischen den beiden vermag ihre eiskalten Hände zu wärmen. Doch für wie lange?

Puccini liess sich von Henri Murgers seit 1845 als Fortsetzungsroman erschienenen «Scènes de Bohème » und dem Theaterstück «Mademoiselle Mimi Pinson» von Alfred de Musset aus demselben Jahr zu seiner Oper inspirieren. Am 1. Februar 1896 ging in Turin die Uraufführung von «La Bohème» unter der Leitung von Arturo Toscanini noch ohne Begeisterungsstürme über die Bühne. Erst ein Jahr später gelang Puccinis vierter Oper in Palermo der grosse Durchbruch. Bis heute zählt die berührende Geschichte über Liebe, Freundschaft und Hoffnung im Angesicht des Todes zu den beliebtesten Werken des Komponisten und lässt seit jeher niemanden kalt.
