You can take the funicular from Wabern to the Gurten in just a few minutes. At 858 metres, Bern's local mountain offers a panoramic view from the Jura to the Bernese Alps, playgrounds for children, fireplaces and restaurants.
The Gurten – Bern’s local mountain at a glance
The Gurten is Bern's local mountain and is located at 858 metres. Since 1899, a funicular railway has connected Wabern with the Gurten Kulm, the mountain station. At the top, an observation tower, fireplaces, a large play park and several restaurants offer variety for families and day trippers. In mid-July, the well-known Gurten Festival takes place on the Gurten.
What to experience
Playing in the play park and riding on the toboggan run
The largest playground in the city of Bern will delight your children with a small railway, climbing equipment and a 300-metre-long marble run. On the 500-meter-long toboggan run, you glide through curves and down a tunnel. In summer, a small, landscaped lake, the Gurtenseeli, provides cooling.
- Good to know: Children from the age of 3 can ride on the toboggan run with accompaniment.
- Tip: Multi-trip tickets for the toboggan run are available on site.
Climb the lookout tower (10 minutes)
You climb 121 steps to the top of the 22-meter-high wooden tower. A 360-degree panorama opens up at the top: You will see the Bernese Alps with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the Jura and the city of Bern below you. A panorama board helps to determine the peaks.
- Good to know: The tower is freely accessible and free of charge.
- Tip: On clear days, the view extends as far as the Chasseral – the high Jura mountain.
