Intro

The Kandersteg-Allmenalp via ferrata takes you through a 350-metre-high rock face with waterfalls, Nepal footbridges and a spectacular roof overhang. A challenging adventure in the Bernese Alps with a fantastic view of the valley.

Difficulty

K 4, at key points K 4–5. Challenging, well-secured climb with vertical walls, a slightly overhanging entry and a sliding traverse. Not suitable for via ferrata beginners.

Valley location/starting point

Kandersteg railway station (1176 m) or valley station of the Allmenalp cable car (1181 m), southwest of the village.

Approach

From the train station, turn right, cross the road and follow the closed Eisbahnstrasse to the end. There turn right through the underpass, then north of the Allmibach to the entrance at approx. 1250 m (approx. 20 minutes). From the valley station of the Allmenalp cable car, a path leads over a private bridge to the same entrance.

Via ferrata

The Kandersteg-Allmenalp via ferrata is an experience for experienced mountaineers: Over a partly vertical wall, you work your way up, keeping to the left, cross the Allmibach on a Nepal footbridge (three-rope bridge) and reach the most striking passage of the trail – a roof overhang hanging 10 meters outwards, which you overcome thanks to a suspended sidewalk and a ladder that rotates 180 degrees. To the left of the second lowest waterfall, it goes up to a ledge, behind it the Allmibach rushes and plunges into the depths. A second Nepal footbridge leads over the stream again – if you dare, choose the variant with the 40-metre-long suspension rope. An additional, 110-metre-long tyrolienne leads from the trail to a rock head and back again – but this can only be accessed in the company of a mountain guide. Over a last wall you reach the exit at approx. 1600 m. In another 20 minutes you can reach the Allmenalp mountain station (1723 m) with Beiz.

Exit

Descent comfortably with the Allmenalp cable car. On foot via Ryharts and Schneitböde back to Kandersteg (approx. 11/4 hours). For those who like it sporty: Tandem paragliding flight into the valley is possible.

Variant

From the Allmenalp mountain station on the panoramic mountain hiking trail via First (2548 m) and Stand (2320 m) through the Golitsche Pass back to Kandersteg.

Area

Bernese Alps / Lötschberg · Exit: approx. 1600 m · Altitude difference: 550 m total, of which 350 m via ferrata · Walking time: 3-3.5 hours

Good to know

The via ferrata is open from the beginning of June to mid-October – parallel to the operation of the Allmenalp cable car. Check current opening hours before the tour. Full via ferrata equipment mandatory: Helmet, harness, via ferrata set. The 110 m long Tyrolienne on the Felskopf is only accessible with a mountain guide.
