Landscape of the Year 2021 – Chäserrugg in Toggenburg
Overview
Intro
The Swiss Landscape Conservation Foundation has named the tourism infrastructure landscape of Chäserrugg in Toggenburg as Landscape of the Year 2021. The award recognises soft tourism and the sustainable use of the landscape. A landscape worth discovering.
In harmony with nature
Tourism infrastructure in the Chäserrugg area plays an enriching role in its relationship with the landscape. The newly reconceived infrastructure does not seek to romanticise the landscape. Instead, it aims to underline the area’s qualities through precise tourism interventions – in a sustainable approach to the landscape.
Herzog & de Meuron buildings
An essential aspect of the infrastructure renewal, which has been ongoing since 2015, is the collaboration with architects Herzog & de Meuron. The colour and shape of the five new buildings take their inspiration from the surrounding stables and barns and echo the local architecture. The most prominent structure, the summit building at 2,262m above sea level, has also already won several architectural awards. This impressive building stands in an exposed location in the heart of the breathtaking landscape of the Churfirsten peaks.
A destination for all seasons
In the inspiring Chäserrugg area, guests can enjoy a relaxing chance to commune with nature while skiing, sledging or hiking in both winter and summer. High up on the Chäserrugg, the most magnificent of the seven Churfirsten peaks, day trippers can enjoy breathtaking views of six countries. In addition, an easy, three-kilometre circular panoramic trail offers unique views into the distance and down into the glittering deep blue waters of the Lake Walen. The Chäserrugg is a year-round destination for solo travellers, families and groups looking for relaxation and sporting experiences, but also for people with an interest in building practices and modern architecture, as well as art and culture enthusiasts.
Swiss Landscape Conservation Foundation
The Swiss Landscape Conservation Foundation has been awarding the title of “Landscape of the Year” since 2011. It recognises not only the outstanding cultural landscapes themselves, but also, explicitly, the community commitment and the specific achievements of the people on the ground.
