Intro
The Monte Brè funicular takes you from Lugano to an altitude of 933 meters. From the summit you can see Lake Lugano, the Valais and Bernese Alps and the Monte Rosa massif. The railway has been running since 1908.
The Monte Brè funicular at a glance
Monte Brè directly near Lugano is considered the sunniest mountain in Switzerland. Since 1908, the funicular has connected the city with the 933-meter-high summit. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Once at the top, a walk to the picturesque village of Brè is a good idea. If you like it cosy, sit down in a restaurant or enjoy the view.
What to experience
Take the funicular to the summit (15 minutes)
In Lugano-Cassarate, you will board the nostalgic funicular and ride 620 meters to the summit. The cars with panoramic roofs offer an unobstructed view of the lake and the city below. At the top, restaurants and panoramic terraces with panoramic views of Lake Lugano and the Alps await you.

Art and culture in the village of Brè (45 minutes)
From the summit, walk to the village of Brè in 15 minutes. In the narrow streets, sculptures and works of art by national and international artists stand in the open air. The Wilhelm Schmid Museum shows works by the Ticino painter. The church of San Fedele houses frescoes by Joseph Birò.

Hike from the summit to Gandria (2.5 hours)
From the summit of Monte Brè you hike through chestnut forests down to the village of Brè and on to the fishing village of Gandria on the lakeshore. Along the way, boards will inform you about nature and the history of the region. In Gandria you walk through winding streets and take the boat back to Lugano.
- Good to know: The descent takes you over steps. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
