Museo Vincenzo Vela
Overview
Intro
The Vela family is omnipresent in Ligornetto right up until today: And no wonder, as close to Milan, it brought the sculptor Vincenzo Vela fame, glory and prosperity. He invested his money in an imposing art villa, which today is home to the Museo Vincenzo Vela, where you can admire the works of the artist family.
In the small border village of Ligornetto one meets with traces of the Vela family in a number of places dotted here and there. The father of Vincenzo was a farmer, his mother ran a restaurant - and to supplement the meager income of the family, the two sons were hired in the regional quarries at an early age.
Later, the brothers met with their due fame as sculptors in Milan. The younger, Vincenzo, made a fortune and had a typical 19th century style art villa built in his native village - a combination between private residence, studio and museum. Around the turn of the millennium, Mario Botta then renovated the estate. And today, in the majestic building set amid a magnificent English garden, the works of Vincenzo Vela together with those of his brother Lorenzo, his son Spartaco and those of artist friends are united under the same roof.
The Museo Vincenzo Vela will remain closed to the public throughout 2014
