Intro

In the middle of Basel's old town, the Natural History Museum shows mammoths, saber-toothed cats and original specimens of extinct animals. The collection in Basel takes you through the Ice Age to today's Swiss nature.

Natural History Museum Basel at a glance

The museum on Augustinergasse in Basel is one of the oldest natural history museums in Switzerland. The permanent exhibitions show dinosaurs, taxidermy, fossils and minerals from all over the world. Especially the Ice Age mammals, extinct and endangered species as well as the native flora and fauna are worth a visit.

What to experience

Permanent exhibition "Mammoth & Saber-toothed Tiger" (1–2 hours)

The exhibition takes you through the evolution of mammals and humans, from early ancestors to the present day. Skeletons, models and life pictures show what the world looked like before the last ice age. And you can feel small and insignificant next to mammoth, saber-toothed cat and giant deer.

Permanent exhibition "Quagga & Dodo" (45–60 minutes)

Here you will come across original specimens of animals such as the dodo or the Tasmanian thylacine that no longer exist. The exhibition tells how humans made these species disappear and which animal species are threatened today. It can be a suitable starting point for conversations about nature conservation with your children.

Spending the night in the museum

With a sleeping bag and flashlight, you roam through the dark museum with your children and roll out your camp next to a saber-toothed cat, cave bear or whale skeleton. Cones of light flit over skeletons, wooden floors creak, unfamiliar noises accompany you. An adventurous night between mammoths and dinosaurs that you and your children won't soon forget.

  • Good to know: A maximum of 3 children between 6 and 10 years of age per adult.
  • Tip: The offer starts in autumn each year. Exact dates can be found on the museum website.
