Pizol Mountain Railways
Overview
Intro
Two gondola and chairlifts take you from Wangs and Bad Ragaz up to the Pizol high plateau. From there you can start on the famous 5-lake hike with a view of the 2844-meter-high Pizol or on descents with skis and snowboard.
Pizol Mountain Railways at a glance
The Pizol Railways connect Wangs and Bad Ragaz in the canton of St. Gallen with the hiking and skiing area around the Pizol. Five gondola and chairlifts provide access to 120 kilometres of hiking trails up to 2844 metres and 50 kilometres of slopes. The area borders on the UNESCO Tectonic Arena Sardona and can be reached from Zurich or St.Gallen in about 1 hour.
What to experience
Take the cable car to the Pizol area (30 minutes)
You can reach the Pizol high plateau via 2 railway lines: From Bad Ragaz, the gondola and chairlift take you to Laufböden at 2226 metres, from Wangs to the Pizolhütte at 2222 metres. At the top, the Panorama High Trail connects the two mountain stations. We recommend a detour to the Tagweidlichopf for an even better view.
- Good to know: With a Swiss Travel Pass or GA travelcard, you can travel at a reduced price on the trains.
- Tip: On the Tagweidlichopf is the photo spot of the Grand Tour of Switzerland.
The 5 Lakes Hike (4-5 hours)
From the Pizolhütte mountain station, the popular mountain hike takes you over 3 steep ascents and descents to 5 lakes with their very own colours. On the way you have a magnificent view of the Pizol summit, the Glarus Alps and the Rhine Valley. The descent ends at the Gaffia mountain station. The best time to hike is between July and October.
- Good to know: Start before 10 a.m. from the valley station to catch the last descent.
- Tip: Wear hiking boots with good tread, at the top the path leads over rock.
Skiing and sledging during the day and at night
In winter, the Pizol becomes a snow sports area with around 50 kilometres of slopes for every level. Away from the slopes, a 3.5-kilometre-long toboggan run leads from Furt to Maienberg. On selected days, you can continue skiing on floodlit slopes until 10.30 pm; professionally accompanied by a full moon and good weather, even only in the moonlight.
- Good to know: Thanks to snowmaking, the main slopes are often skiable until the beginning of April.
- Tip: Combine a day of skiing with a dip in the Tamina Therme in Bad Ragaz.
