Intro
The Andermatt snowshoe trail runs via Mettlen to the snow-covered Unteralp. The crowning glory of this circular tour: the view from the Mariahilf Chapel over the village of Andermatt at the foot of the Oberalp Pass.
Description
This circular tour starts at the village bridge in Andermatt. During the stagecoach era between 1830 and 1882, up to 80,000 people crossed the Gotthard each year. The square, located around the village bridge, was then the hub and centre of Andermatt. It was here that the coaches would stop before they tackled the pass crossing.
Now you leave the Andermatt tennis centre behind you and make your way past Vorder and Hinter Holzi to Mettlen, the highest point of the tour. Here, you have already gone halfway and hence it is a good time to take a short break. Snowshoe hikers will enjoy the views of the Gurschenbach icefall.
On the way back from Metteln to Andermatt you cross the valley run from Gurschen and pass the Brunnen marksmen’s clubhouse. Not far away is the Mariahilf Chapel. This was built in 1735/1736 to protect against avalanches. Here, do take a final look into the valley before returning to Andermatt: Your view stretches to the south to Hospental and northwards to the Schöllenen.
