Description
The route starts in the picturesque municipality of Gelterkinden in the Upper Basel region. As soon as you’re on your bike, there's a first ascent to negotiate to Rünenberg. The idyllic farming village with a farm shop lies smack in the middle of a plateau of the Tafeljura mountains.
The route continues to Kilchberg, the smallest municipality in the Basel region. The lavishly restored church of St. Martin is considered the last important monument of neo-Gothic church building in the canton. Enjoy the cool breeze during the descent to Zeglingen. Soon after, a short climb takes you to the pretty village of OItingen in the Upper Basel region, where the old parish garden and the church are well worth a visit. The garden, lovingly restored according to old drawings from the 18th century, is open to the public and invites you to relax and unwind.
The route leads via Anwil and the stately Baregg farmhouse up towards Farnsberg. The forested Jura hill boasts a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Flowering meadows, hedgerows and sparse forests line the path. The Farnsburg ruins are well worth a visit. The extensive castle complex was built in 1330. The imposing remains of the shield wall, towers, historical buildings and the well-preserved circular wall allow you to immerse yourself in the Habsburg era. The views of the Alps and the Black Forest are spectacular in good weather. The descent from the castle ruins to Gelterkinden happens almost by itself.
This delightful and varied circular route is well worth it any time of year. There's a wide selection of regional products to discover in farm shops and restaurants. The views are particularly stunning in the spring as you take in the Basel region's cherry blossoms in all their splendour.
