Chäserenholz-Schneeschuhtrail
Overview
Intro
The circular hike on top of the Rigi offers fascinating views of Lake Lucerne, the Alps of Uri, the cities of Lucerne and Zug, and the lakes of Central Switzerland. From the mountain station, the snowshoe trail leads to Alp Chäserenholz, with views of the Grosse and Kleine Mythen, the landmarks of the Canton of Schwyz.
Description
The tour starts at the Rigi Kulm mountain station. The Kulm, located directly above the station, is the Rigi's highest peak at 1,798 metres. The name Kulm can be traced back to the Latin word "culmus", meaning gable or peak, and was first mentioned by the Lucerne town clerk in 1601.
The views up here are stunning, sweeping over Lake Lucerne and the snow-covered valleys to the peaks of the Uri Alps. Discover the cities of Lucerne and Zug from a bird's eye vantage point. 13 lakes lie nestled in the winter landscape between the agglomerations and villages. The view extends as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains in good weather.
Leaving the historic Hotel Rigi Kulm behind, you are on the snowshoe trail that passes above the toboggan run after only a few metres.
As you descend leisurely towards the Chäserenholz alp restaurant, the peaks of the Grosse and Kleine Mythen and the Lake Lauerz come into view.
Even if you have only covered just under a kilometre, the alp restaurant is well worth a stop. Traditional cheese specialities are served in the cosy Alp-Stübli. Those who wish to delve into the secrets of cheese-making can visit the in-house cheese dairy or make alpine cheese under qualified supervision.
After refreshments, the trail leads back to Rigi Kulm. On the way back, you look over the long summit ridge with Schild, Würzestock and Dossen as far as Scheidegg.
