Arflinafurgga Trail
Overview
Intro
This route offers impressive scenery and is also perfect for snowshoe hiking beginners. The views of the Heuberge basin, the Rätikon mountains and Schanfigg valley are magnificent. It passes through the Arflinafurgga Pass, which lends its name to this trail, then continues on a beautiful path along a ridge and goes past Unter Cluner See lake shortly before arriving at the destination.
Description
Fideriser Heuberge is on a plateau at around 2,000 metres above sea level and is sure to be blanketed in snow. The small winter sports resort with its all-natural snow is known in particular for its 12-kilometre toboggan run, one of the longest in the country. You can take this as a clue about how to get back down to the valley.
The trail starts at Berggasthaus Arflina and initially follows the winter hiking trail. But it will not be long before you branch away from this trail and, after around 20 minutes of climbing, you will be overlooking the Cluner See lake in the heart of the pristine winter landscape. The blanket of snow conceals a fen of national importance – which happens to make perfect terrain for snowshoe hiking in winter. After climbing around 250 metres, you will reach your first waypoint: the Arflinafurgga Pass. This is a good spot for taking a break and admiring the panorama: the view sweeps across the gentle southern slopes of the Schanfigg valley and beyond towards the central Grisons region, or back down into the Heuberge basin and north into St. Antöniertal valley and the limestone of Rätikon.
From this point on, you will cross a ridge for around two kilometres, where you will occasionally switch to the south side depending on the terrain. Soon the steep ridge leading up the Mattjisch Horn (2,461 metres above sea level) will come into view. However, shortly before this ascent, the trail turns off and leaves the ridge behind. The descent starts at the foot of the imposing north face of the Mattjisch Horn. You will then walk around a rocky outcrop and, after a somewhat steeper section, you will reach the snow-covered Unter Cluner See lake. You then have another short climb before completing the circular route.
