Gitschital Bike
Overview
Intro
The Gitschital bike route offers you a fantastic combination of Lake Lucerne and mountain valley. This varied tour is peppered with substantial ascents and leads you to a quiet and remote side valley.
Description
From the train station Altdorf you bike in a northerly direction to Wild Ried and subsequently west on a meadow path to Unterdorf. Apart from a visit of the castle A Pro and its mineral exhibition, it is also recommended to make an additional detour along the lake of Uri with its swimming islands Lorelei.
The tour branches off at the abbey St. Lazarus, which originates back to the Middle Ages and which is the oldest convent in Uri. The track then becomes steeper up to the forest road Gitschital. This winding road has challenging ascents. Before you enter the tunnel of Gitschital, you should definitely have a quick break at the view point Stotzigen - the view down to the delta of the river Reuss is breathtaking. The last 3 kilometres of the route lead you through cool forests and alpine meadows all the way to Gitschitaler Boden, where you reach the highest point of the route.
You then make your way down to Bodenwald on the same track. Next bike south through the town of Attinghausen, with views of the historic castle ruin, back to the starting point.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
