The Grächen Loop is an all-mountain tour around the village of Grächen. It consists of a mix of easy single trails with some sections on wider roads. A dreamy lake, Grächerwald forest with its irrigation channels, a beautiful alp and the panorama with Barrhorn and Weisshorn are an experience for any biker.
Description
High above the Matter Valley, on a sunny southwestern-looking terrace, is the mountain village of Grächen. The tour starts in the centre, passes the Hannigalp base station and continues across the meadows. It turns after the Drieri channel, shortly before Ritigrabe. The trail then crosses the Chilcheri channel. Grächen has a total of four irrigation channels. These open water supply systems were and still are used today to irrigate pastures and fields. The route then climbs slightly up a gravel road before the first technical downhill begins. Shortly thereafter it reaches the small Grächen Lake. The delightful surroundings offer a marvellous view of the Weisshorn and are a great place to linger. Especially on a hot summer day, there is no better place for a swim.
A pleasant trail then rises slightly up to the Äbnet turn-off and continues through the dense Grächen forest to just before Bärgji-Alp with its cosy restaurant. This is a good spot to take a breather because a number of 3000 and 4000 m peaks are located on the other side of the valley. The Barrhorn, Europe’s highest summit without any snow, and the wall of the Weisshorn are the most eye-catching.
Shortly after the «Grächen Bärgji» base station, the trail turns left. Near Titter there is an opportunity to take an attractive, flowing enduro trail down to Kalpetran. The tour described here returns to the starting point in Grächen by way of a pleasant trail, alternating between meadows and forest.
