Hohsaas Trail
Overview
Intro
A must for anyone who enjoys being out and about in high Alpine scenery. The snowshoe trail from Kreuzboden to the Hohsaas mountain station leads past the Weissmieshütte restaurant, offering stunning views of the 4000-metre peaks of the Saas Valley.
Description
The snowshoe trek begins with scenic views at the middle station of the Kreuzboden cable car, 2,400 metres above sea level. The trail leads along the ridge of the former glacier's moraine on the ski slope's edge. After a challenging zigzag path that winds its way up between the rocky ledges, you reach the Weissmieshüttte.
Arriving at the mountain hut, you have climbed the first 300 metres. Enjoy the panoramic views of the Mischabel chain with Täschhorn, Dom and Lenzspitze on the sunny terrace. A look at the old part of the hut is also worthwhile. The Weissmieshütte is one of the few remaining SAC huts from the founding years. Contrary to the original plans, the old hut wasn't demolished in 1959 but underwent gentle renovation.
From the Weissmieshütte, the trail continues over the Talmatterhang, where you'll be at the foot of the Lagginhorn, which towers impressively over the Saas Valley at 4,010 metres. The retreating Tälli, Lagginhorn and Hohlaub glaciers point the way to the summit ridge. Follow the markings to the Hohsaas mountain station, where magnificent views of the 18 four-thousand-metre peaks of the Saas Valley beckon.
