At the far end of the wide valley floor, this gently undulating trail winds its way through a delightful landscape with typical Walser settlements and magnificent mountains. Its altitude and remoteness make it perfect for intensive training. Lucky visitors will find deer, chamois or ibexes along the way.
Description
A cross-country skiing trail isn’t the first thing you’d expect to find in the Safien Valley, but the wide and gently undulating terrain at the far end of the valley provides ideal conditions for one. The circular trail starts and ends by the bridge approximately 300 metres north of the Turrahus restaurant. Flatter sections alternate pleasantly with short climbs and descents. Thanks to its location at 1,800 m above sea level, the route is ideal for altitude training. Another advantage: the area is quite remote, so there’s plenty of room for intensive training.
However, those who observe the surroundings closely from time to time may be lucky enough to spot deer, chamois or even ibexes. They will also be impressed by the Alpine scenery including the Safierberg, Wisshorn and the Pizzas d’Anarosa. The view stretches to the Camana huts, which constrast starkly with the landscape like a string of pearls in the snow.
The scattered Walser settlements typical of the Safien Valley are also visible from the trail. In the Turra exhibition stable near the start and end of the route, visitors can learn fascinating facts about the old wooden buildings and the settlement of the valley. They can even get involved and try their hand at laying a shingle roof. Those who like to take it easy can satisfy their hunger and thirst with fine regional delicacies in the Turrahus mountain inn or the Gasslihof farm pub.
