Description
The town of Sursee is located at the northern end of Lake Sempach. It takes a few minutes to reach the lake from the well-kept old town. A detour to the Mariazell pilgrimage chapel of the church ruins on the lake is worthwhile. Unfortunately, large parts of the eastern bank are private and inaccessible. But that is all right: today’s stage takes you to Lucerne’s hilly countryside in any case, where you go up and down all the time. The view is of the stunning mountain world of the Säntis and others.
On this strenuous stretch, you suddenly see an Eiffel Tower. This is the Beromünster national radio station transmitter. It began operating in 1931 and stopped again 77 years later. The main transmission tower on the Blosenberg is a listed building. Items from the former medium wave transmitter can be viewed at the Museum of Communication in Bern. Not only can you look at them, but you can also bite into sweet strawberries at the «Besenbeiz Tabakschüür». A visit to the Monastery of St. Michael in Beromünster is also worthwhile. Construction began on today's church at the turn of the millennium. It is surrounded by a magnificent complex and somewhat less appealing through traffic.
You go over the Erlosen hills, past the Centre for Electrobiology and down to the stunning Baldeggersee lake. The many chattering storks also like it there. They circle majestically above the Richensee tower castle. The sturdy megalithic walls are said to have been built around 1240 by the Counts of Kyburg. Cyclists and other day-trippers gather around the local restaurant. In contrast to the storks, this gathering is less about chattering and more about conversing ...
Heidegg Castle from the 11th/12th century towers above the northern end of Lake Baldegg. The rose garden smells divine. The bike route runs slowly past the castle and winery. Mottled cows graze happily. The view from the top of the Lindenberg ridge, which brings together the cantons of Lucerne and Aargau, is superb. Nothing stands in the way of the descent through the shady Sulzerwald forest to Muri. We are on the way to Freiamt.
