Mittelländer Hügelroute
Overview
Intro
The wide Reuss floodplain is a peaceful natural paradise. Then the hilly Säuliamt, once off the larger trading routes, the rural idyll is soon penetrated by a motorway. Neat urban districts announce the presence of the city.
Description
The spires of the Muri monastery rise cheerily towards the sky. The private Habsburg monastery is a listed building and is considered to be a cultural asset of national importance. The alluvial plain of the Reuss stretches out in front of you, wide and quiet. The wonderful river - the fourth largest in Switzerland after the Rhine, Aare and Rhone - forms the border between the cantons of Aargau and Zurich.
Then come all the «amts»: from Freiamt you continue to Knonaueramt or Säuliamt. But there are also fruit orchards, horse-drawn carriages and cows grazing contentedly here, and it goes on. The stage leads elegantly past Hedingen and Bonstetten into the Reppischtal valley. In the direction of travel, the Uto Kulm becomes visible, the summit of the Uetliberg at 871 metres. Down at the Reppisch, the almost 30-kilometre-long tributary of the Limmat, you can enjoy jogging, cycling and of course walking the dog.
In the Wüerital nature reserve, for a brief moment you do not feel or hear the motorway or rail traffic at all. There is now more of the pull of the big city: «Where Züri walks» you go through Birmensdorf, Urdorf and Schlieren. Futuristic apartment blocks stand out next to those from the sixties. Lively activity awaits you in Altstetten and Wiedikon, and street cafes are grouped around Idaplatz. Many people live in the Jewish faith in Wiedikon, and there are several Israelite communities. At the athletics facility on Hertersteg you can indulge in a variety of leisure activities; there is a colourful mix of cultures here.
Pleasantly protected and riding under tall trees, the final part of this stage runs along the Sihl to Zurich main station. The largest city in Switzerland is also the most important economic centre. The most visited historical museum in Switzerland, the Zurich State Museum, is located right next to the railway station.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
