The winter hiking trail at Stoos offers a leisurely alternative for those who want to escape the bustle of winter sports and find peace in the mountains of Central Switzerland.
Description
Hikers and winter sports enthusiasts ride the Stoosbahn to the car-free mountain village of Stoos (1,300m above sea level). At the top, they go their separate ways. The winter hiking trail follows a remote and peaceful route through the hilly landscape and away from the village. With the Muota Valley far below, the Mythen mountains and Muotatal peaks loom beyond the basin. The trail passes by farmsteads on a gentle incline, reaching its highest point at Brunnerboden, where the route gradually starts to even out. Along the way, hikers can make a short detour to the observation platform, which offers a clear view downwards to the valley station of the world's steepest funicular railway.
The winter hiking trail takes its name from a field that it crosses: «Nühusweidli» means «small meadow with a new house». Many fields in Schwyz have «Weid» (meadow) in their names, reflecting the importance of agriculture in the canton’s past. The peaceful excursion into nature ends at the valley station of the Klingenstock chairlift. On the final part of the route, hikers are surrounded by the vibrant winter sports scene. This includes folk music, with which the mountain village and its people have an intimate relationship, as expressed by popular songs like «Uf em Stoos ob Schwyz».
