Oberaar Trail
Overview
Intro
This impressive mountain hike around the headwaters of the river Aare connects the Grimsel Pass with the Oberaarsee lake. With two self-operated cable cars, this excursion is suitable for the whole family.
Description
This tour sets off from the Sidelhorn cable car, which departs from the Grimsel Hospiz mountain hotel. In the middle ages, the original hospice provided shelter for passing traders with mules and travellers. After being renovated and rebuilt multiple times, the new hospice in 1932 caused something of a stir: it was the first electrically heated hotel in all of Europe.
From here, take the gondola lift to the mountain station right next to the Grimsel Pass. Now for the actual walking – and, sure enough, your legs will get to work straight away: covering 300 metres of elevation, the trail leads up to Husegg over lovely granite slabs. You will have views of the activity at the Grimsel Pass and the surrounding high mountains. With leisurely undulations, one viewpoint follows another. Lake Grimsel, the biggest lake in the Grimsel region, is resplendent far below. The Finsteraarhorn towers in the distance – at 4,274 metres, it is the highest point in the canton of Bern and the entire Rhine basin.
The trail leads past the Triebteseewli lake and down to the cosy Berghaus Oberaar lodge via Bäregg. This spot has views of the Oberaarsee lake, at the end of which the river Aare springs from the glacier. After a hearty pick-me-up at the Berghaus Oberaar, you will glide through the Alps back to Grimsel Hospiz in the Oberaar cable car.
