Intro
The route starts a the Arth-Goldau RB station from where you take the Rigibahn to Rigi Wölfertschen-First. This is the beginning of the demanding route, with breathtaking panoramic views accompanying you along the entire way.
Description
The hike begins in Rigi Kaltbad with its spacious village square. The hotel of the same name and the Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths & Spa are also located here. The roots of the former Grand Hotel Kaltbad date back to the beginning of wellness tourism on the Rigi. The Kaltbad spring with its reputed healing powers was first mentioned in 1540. By 1600, the health resort was already attracting more than 100 bathing tourists every day. In the next centuries, high-ranking guests such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Queen Victoria of England visited the Rigi.
From Kaltbad, the hiking trail winds around the peaks of the Schild and the Würzestock, crosses small mountain streams, and passes through sparse forests and pastures. Interesting rock formations line the path and you repeatedly pass old pieces of track. They are remnants of the former Rigi-Kaltbad-Scheidegg Swiss narrow-gauge railway. The panoramic trail leads along the route of the former railway. When it was completed in 1875, it was the highest adhesion railway in Europe. In 1931, the railway’s operations were halted for financial reasons. The old railway bridge, a short tunnel and a discarded wagon that you pass near Unterstetten have been preserved. The latter is now used as a holiday home.
The panorama is unique, with a view of the green hills, Lake Lucerne and the Alps rising in the background. Along the way, there are cosy rest areas and fire pits that invite you to linger for a while. There are various alpine restaurants along the panoramic path where you can stop off.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
