Rive Droite
Overview
Intro
An outing to the magnificent Genevan countryside through the vineyards on the right bank. From Meyrin, you pass through the villages of Bourdigny-Dessous, Choully, Peissy, Russin, Dardagny and Malval to come back to Meyrin.
Description
The route starts near the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), where, among other things, the World Wide Web was invented and where the origins of the universe are being researched with the help of the world's unique particle accelerator.
From here, the path leads through the hamlets of Satigny, the largest wine-growing commune in Switzerland. Bourdigny, Choully and Peissy are fine examples of villages with lots of charm and perfectly preserved architecture. The viewpoints of the Geneva region are as numerous as they are breathtaking.
Little by little, the city disappears. The closer you get to the Vallon de l'Allondon, named after the region's most important river, the landscape takes on a southern flair. In Les Granges, you can discover the region's natural treasures at the nature centre. Further on, the hamlet of Malval offers a spectacular view of this floodplain of national importance, whose dynamics have been preserved thanks to refraining from building structures in the watercourse.
After the quiet and picturesquely perched hamlet of Essertines, the mood changes drastically once more as soon as you cross the Roulave valley with its tributary of the Allondon. The rugged topography and the coolness of the riparian forest, which provides a habitat for fire salamanders among other species, are in stark contrast to the Allondon valley.
The route then leads through the vineyards of the pretty village of Dardagny, whose castle can be admired from the hillside. From Dardagny, it continues through the forest once more before coming upon a surprising loop of the river Rhone about 50 metres lower.
The finish, the train station of La Plaine, is now within sight. From here it takes us about 20 minutes by train back to the centre of Geneva.
The numerous information panels explaining the grape varieties grown in the region and the cultivation techniques will complement your visit.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
