Sardona-Welterbe-Weg
Overview
Intro
Six information panels between the top station of the Filzbach chairlift (Habergschwänd) and the Talalpsee lake give details of this geological phenomenon. The three-lakes stage then leads past the Spaneggsee lake over the Mürtschenfurggel and Murgseefurggel passes to the Murgsee lake.
Description
Filzbach is situated about 300 metres above the Walensee in the canton of Glarus. The village has maintained a small ski centre since the 1960s, and in the 1970s, the second largest sports centre in Switzerland was built here. The remains of a Roman cartel are still present today to the west of the settlement. Here, the view over the lake and of the Churfirsten peaks is particularly striking.
Past the valley station of the ski lift, the steep ascent begins on the north slope along winding paths. At Habergschänd, the trail turns east and you can enjoy the mountain panorama to the full. Through a pretty patch of forest, the trail enters the narrow Vorder Tal valley. Steep rock faces rise right at the edge of the path. Soon the Talalp lake becomes visible, situated between mountain peaks up to a thousand metres higher.
This is where the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona begins, where the formation of the mountains can be witnessed thanks to impressive geophenomena. Descriptive information boards explain the geological processes. Along the trail there are rocks with an age difference of up to almost a hundred million years.
Then the Hinter Tal begins right after the lake, with pastures and conifers between rocky and steep slopes. Here it is worth making a detour to the Hellloch. This approximately thirty-metre-deep, funnel-shaped depression in the ground was created by the collapse of a huge underground cave.
The ascent to Rosstannen follows at the end of the Hintertal valley. Here you have a beautiful view of the Spanegg lake which sits in a sunken area. To the east, the Mürtschenstock rises imposingly with its three peaks Stock, Fulen and Ruchen. More and more stones and gravel are found among the grass and isolated trees.
Between the summits of Vorchöpf and Schwarzchopf, the trail continues uphill through a narrow valley. Steep scree slopes line the path. Once you reach the top, you have a splendid view of the plains. In the flat wetland area of Ober Mürtschenalp, the terrain is once again lush green.
A last short ascent past blueberry bushes leads across the Murgsee Furgglen. The end of the Murgtal valley with the three clear Murg lakes is located just behind it. In the wetland above the tree line, they are surrounded only by meadows and the nearby peaks. The stage ends at the Murgsee hut, popular with fishermen.
