Sport&Fun in Mompé Medel: the climb up to the start of the sledging run is quite strenuous, but racing back down the valley, with views over Disentis, is sheer fun.
Description
Mompé Medel (which means "at the foot of the mountain") is indeed in a fantastic location at the foot of the mountains mountains in the Val Medel. The road from Disentis to the Lukmanier Pass goes along this valley. Hardly anywhere would you get a better view of Disentis and its impressive abbey.
Mompé Medel can only be reached by car, and there are parking spaces at the top end of the village. The climb up to the start in Stagias is on a prepared footpath and in some places along the sledging run which has been maintained since 2001 by a committed group of locals. Once a year, this group, the "Uniun da scursalar e spassegiar Mumpé Medel", organises a traditional race with old-fashioned "horned" sledges. The higher you climb, the further you can see into the valleys: to the east across the Surselva, and to the east towards the Val Tujetsch. Ranged along the northern horizon are countless peaks – from Piz Ault to the Brigels ridge. You should reach the start after about 30 to 40 minutes.
The descent begins gently but soon gathers pace. The sledging run goes down a road which at first winds along in wide bends between snowy pine trees and bushes. Then you cross some open countryside before reaching your destination at the Bar La Scursalada. There you can have a coffee to console you for the fact that a sledging run is over far too quickly! But you can always walk back up again...
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
