Sense–Glâne–Veveyse
Overview
Intro
The rolling hills of the Gantrisch Nature Park. Between Guggershörnli and Sensegraben past the much-sung-about Guggisberg. The River Sense is crossed at Guggerbach. The route then continues into Friburgerland via Zumholz to Plaffeien.
Description
Somewhere between Guggershörnli and Sense, on the border between the Cantons of Bern and Fribourg, lies the village of Schwarzenburg. Nestled in the hilly landscape of the Gantrisch nature park, the cycle path takes you from the market square past some quaint farmhouses and pretty houses straight out into the countryside.
It is a gentle climb from here all the way to Kalchstätten, where fantastic views of the Gantrisch mountain chain and the rest of the Alps await you. The Gantrisch nature park lies in the triangle formed by the cities of Bern, Thun and Fribourg in a landscape dominated by extensive woodland, meadows and deep gorges. Here in «dairy country», there are many different breeds of cow to spot as you go along. Inquisitive sheep roam across fields and meadows, while shy game animals patrol the neighbouring woodland.
Your descent begins at Kalchstätten. A hairpin bend leads down to the Guggersbachbrügg bridge over the Sense, which marks the border between the Cantons of Bern and Fribourg. The river flows for around 38 kilometres and enters the Saane at Laupen. It was crowned Europe’s most beautiful river by the conservation organisation WWF and is considered to be one of the last remaining wild rivers in the Alps.
The stage now continues in the Canton of Fribourg, with a further hairpin bend taking you up towards Zumholz. You’re now getting close to your destination. Plaffeien lies on a small plateau in the Sense-Oberland region, surrounded by wooded hills and mountains. The municipality, which includes the localities of Plaffeien, Oberschrot, Zumholz, Zollhaus and Schwarzsee, is the second largest in Fribourg in terms of area and the only one in the canton to lie within the Gantrisch nature park. The region’s history has been shaped by agriculture, the timber trade and, later on, tourism – especially around the Schwarzsee lake.
