Sentiero Lago di Lugano
Overview
Intro
Spectacular ridge, border and panoramic tour with Gazzirola as the highlight. Possibilities for a break at San Lucio, where a small lake and tiny church beckon. Through a limestone landscape with unusual vegetation and on to Capanna Pairolo.
Description
The modern Capanna Monte Bar SAC hut, which was rebuilt in 2016, is the starting point for this stage. It was reopened and connected to the electricity grid 80 years after its original construction, ensuring year-round operation. From here, you ascend directly to the ridgeway. You then take a leisurely stroll to Passo di Pozzaiolo. The ascent to the Gazzirola peak is stunning but challenging. The mountain is situated at the very end of Val Colla, with its south-west ridge forming the border with Italy. The view towards Lugano, into the Po Valley and the Alps, is impressive.
Now follows the descent to Passo San Lucio and the hut of the same name, where you can stop off. You then continue along the border ridge to Monte Cucco, accompanied by views of the surrounding Ticinese mountains, the peaks in Italy and the Alps behind them.
From Colmo di San Bernardo, the trail changes from picturesque meadows to rocky terrain. The final metres of this leg follow: up to Cima di Fojorina, on to Cima dell’Oress and finally to the destination for this stage at Capanna Pairolo. The hut is nestled in meadows with wonderful Alpine flora, grazing dairy cattle and Scottish highland cows.
