Thurgauer Panoramaweg
Overview
Intro
Worth seeing: Hagenwil moated castle with knight’s hall, granary, courtyard tavern, Biedermeier parlour and own wine. After crossing the River Sitter with the last ferry left in Canton Thurgau, the route leads along a root-covered path through a marshland nature reserve.
Description
Amriswil is located near to Lake Constance at a major traffic junction. The roads from Romanshorn, Arbon, St. Gallen, Kreuzlingen, Bischofszell and Weinfelden all meet here.
The leg leads from the train station, through a residential district to the market square, right next to which is the reformed church in neo-Gothic style. The 75 metre high church tower is the highest in the canton of Thurgau. Soon the route becomes greener, more expansive and more aqueous: the water castle at Hagenwil is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Switzerland. The first mention of the castle dates back to the 13th century. Alongside the restaurant that operates out of the castle, it also hosts regular cultural events.
The route continues over lovely elevated meadows dotted with fruit trees. Along the way, you can see red kites searching for food and farmers at work. Blidegg Castle sits magnificently atop a rock. Below the half-timbered building is the Degenau Chapel, which lies on the old pilgrimage route from Konstanz to St. Gallen.
At this point, timing is key, otherwise you’ll be forced to stop. The Sitter ferry is moved from bank to bank by sheer manpower. From 1 April to 31 October, the boat sets sail on the hour every hour at weekends and by special arrangement on weekdays. There’s also a fee for taking the ferry.
After a brief climb, you reach the idyllic Horber Weier. It’s one of five ponds to be artificially created in the 15th century for fish farming purposes. The ponds are beautifully nestled in the hilly landscape. Passing through the village and past Hauptwil Castle, the route soon disappears into the forest. At the entrance to the forest you’ll find Waldschenke Bischofszell. If you like, you can stop here for a bite to eat before completing the short distance to the end of the trail. And if you have more time, you can visit the baroque old town of Bischofszell to finish off. It stretches across a terrace overlooking the confluence of the Sitter and Thur rivers.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
