Thurgauer Panoramaweg
Overview
Intro
Curved arched bridge dating from 1487 near Bischofszell. Heiligkreuz Church with former fortified tower. The Nollen, the highest rise in Thurgau, with sweeping views from the Bodensee to the Alps. Finally the old town of Wil – well worth seeing.
Description
Bischofszell is the start of the second stage of the Thurgau mountain trail. It’s worth taking a detour to the beautiful old town. The homogenous baroque-style town centre was built after a devastating fire in 1743.
The start of the walk involves a descent down to the Thur river. As you pass by the old paper mill, the charming Thur bridge, completed in 1487, comes into view. After the bridge, the stage proceeds along the banks of the Thur. Past Katzensteig Castle, beautiful far-reaching views to the Säntis and the Churfirsten peaks open up.
The route takes you over lovely fields and pastures before passing by the camel park at Olmerswil, which, as the name suggests, is home to camels, but also llamas, alpacas, ferrets, tarantulas and koi carp.
Around one hour later you reach Nollen, the highest point in Thurgau. The restaurant/hotel offers a great far-ranging view of the Alps and Lake Constance. The plateau between the Thurgau section of the Thur Valley and the St. Gallen section is also known as the “Rigi of Thurgau”.
Wooded sections and meadows with fruit trees alternate until the first family homes finally appear as you enter Wil. You soon find yourself in the middle of the charming old town. It lies on a hill at the gateway to the Toggenburg region. Half-timbered buildings, house fronts featuring decorative paintwork, the Hauptmannshaus (captain’s house) at Hofplatz, the classical Baronenhaus (baron’s house) as well as picturesque alleyways and squares make up the magnificent town centre – the perfect end to the Thurgau panoramic trail.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
