Intro

Three days from village to village through the peaceful winter landscape of Surselva: The Via Mundaun leads from Obersaxen into Lumnezia on scenic paths over mountain ranges and along sunny slopes. You can discover traditional alms on the first stage towards the Wali mountain restaurant. The view to Piz Mundaun then opens up and accompanies you along the entire route.

Description

Long-distance hikes are also possible in the winter, as the Via Mundaun perfectly proves. The three-day winter hike begins on the outskirts of Friggahüs, a hamlet in Obersaxen. From the very beginning, the path climbs upwards through white, snow-covered forests and over open alps. The scattered alms bear silent witness to bygone times in the winter landscape.

After around two hours, you reach the Wali mountain restaurant. The sunny terrace is an inviting spot to relax with a view of the Obersaxen Mundaun ski resort and a large helping of Grisons hospitality. Suitably refreshed, you can then tackle the last climb of the day: Nestled in the white winter landscape – between two ski lifts but still off the beaten track – you reach the level of the Kartitscha mountain station.

Here, you cross the piste and a view opens up of the prominent Piz Mundaun. The peak not only lends its name to the long-distance hike but also accompanies all three stages of the route. You begin your descent here: The trail winds past Untermatt and then down to Meierhof, the main town in the municipality of Obersaxen.

Tranquillity rather than hustle and bustle, nature rather than achievement – that’s what makes the Via Mundaun special. It’s not a hike for the masses but suitable for anyone in search of something genuine. It allows you to immerse yourself in a region that gives you space to breathe deeply and enjoy, even in peak season. The three stages (401, 402 et 403) are easy to negotiate for experienced winter hikers. You can opt to have your luggage transported between hotels.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
