Via Mundaun 3
Overview
Intro
The final stage of the Via Mundaun takes you deeper into the sun-drenched Lumnezia. Once you complete the final ascent to Curschellas, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking view into the valley. Your destination is Lumbrein, the perfect end to a spectacular winter hike through Surselva.
Description
The centre of the village of Vella features stone houses, the Sogn Roc chapel and the Schloss de Mont castle. The final stage links Vella to Lumbrein. Taking the direct route would, of course, be too simple: Another ascent lies ahead, but it’s worth it.
Shortly after the near-natural Davos Munts bathing lake, it’s time to head uphill again. Gaining elevation feels different in the snow: more challenging, but also more meditative. Each step brings you closer to the highest point of the tour: Curschellas at an altitude of more than 1,700 metres. Here, winter shows its impressive side again: Peaceful, white and vast, the view sweeps across to Piz Terri, one of the mightiest peaks in the region.
The descent winds down many bends into the valley. As you approach Lumbrein, the first stables line the way. The houses get closer together, village life becomes tangible. After three eventful days, the Via Mundaun ends in Lumbrein, known for the medieval Chisti da Lumerins tower house. The giant crystals of the Péz Regina are also famous. You can see the 950-kilogram crystal group – one of the largest ever found in the Alps – at the Casa d’Angel cultural centre.
A postbus runs hourly from Lumbrein back to Vella. Here’s a tip for you: You can also extend the tour from Lumbrein to Vrin. This section is not groomed by machines and requires snowshoes; after heavy snow, the trail may not be visible. After lengthier dry periods, the trail can be tackled even without snowshoes.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
