Vier-Quellen-Weg
Overview
Intro
The trail climbs steeply up to Alp Summermatten, to the Sellapass and on to the highest point of the Four Springs Trail, the Piz Giübin (2776m), from where you can marvel at the panoramic view. The descent leads to the dam at the Sellasee lake and on to the Gotthardpass.
Description
The second stage of the Four Sources Trail begins at the Vermigelhütte at the end of the Unteralptal valley. The path leads across pastures, past alpine roses and blueberry bushes towards Piz Giübin. On the left side there is a waterfall, fed by a mountain lake about 200 metres higher. The path follows the Unteralpreuss to the Zingelfurtflue. The route continues uphill via Alp Summermatten. Then the trail turns into a rocky path that becomes steeper. Some of the individual pieces of stone have a crystalline shimmer. You then reach the Passo della Sella, also known as the Sella Pass. This is not only the highest point of the stage, but also of the entire Four Springs Trail. During a short detour you can also climb the summit of Piz Giübin at an altitude of 2,776 metres. The breathtaking view across the numerous mountain peaks invites you to take a long break.
The pass crossing is close to the famous mountain peak of Pizzo Centrale. This peak is the highest mountain in the Gotthard massif and was even a three-thousand metre peak until the 1970s. During this time the triangulation point reached a height of 3,001 metres. Due to a rock fall at the summit, it was later corrected to 2,999 metres.
The descent now follows. Initially, the path leads across stony terrain, then later through alpine meadows. During the descent, you have a view of Lake Sella at all times, and if you are lucky, you have a chance to see chamois or even ibexes. The route next leads to a reservoir, which is one of the smaller reservoirs in Switzerland. The trail finally passes over the 36-metre-high gravity dam to the last short section, the Gotthard Pass, which is the destination for the hike. The path down into the valley initially follows a surfaced access road to the reservoir and then turns into a path. As you descend, the 13th century hospice, the Hotel Albergo San Gottardo and the St. Gotthard Museum with its striking hipped roof are visible from afar.
