Waldegga Trail
Overview
Intro
Past the highest football pitch in Europe and then onto winding paths leading higher and higher – after hiking through the snow-covered larch forest, snowshoe hikers will reach the top of the route with wonderful views of the Bietschhorn, Aletschhorn and Finsteraarhorn.
Description
High above the Vispertal Valley, surrounded by the Valais and Bernese Alps, the sunny plateau in Gspon is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature. The old sun-baked houses with their flagstone roofs and traditional storehouses lend the region its charm. The Waldegga Trail above the car-free mountain village is suitable for snowshoe hikers who already have some experience of the terrain. It is recommended in the depths of winter and early spring alike, offering the chance to go snowshoeing when it is no longer possible in other places.
The circuit tour starts from the Staldenried-Gspon cable car mountain station. The first sight that will grab your attention is the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena. Located at a height of 2,000 metres, this transforms into Europe’s highest football stadium in summer. It is also the only pitch in the world where the teams have to travel by cable car to play on the artificial grass. The actual high-altitude hike begins past the Waldegga ski lift. The route takes the form of winding paths through the pine and larch forest in the direction of Waldegga and Sädolti. On the way, you’ll be wowed time and again by views of the Bernese Alps, with the Bietschhorn, Aletschhorn and Finsteraarhorn flaunting their best angles.
The route continues up the mountain to Seewjini. At this point, the forest becomes less dense. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a couple of wood grouse. Just a few steps further and you’ll find yourself close to the large Gspon ski lift beneath Scheidbodo, where enthusiastic skiers will be busy winding their way down the thrilling hillside descent. If you, too, would like to get some exercise in, it’s only a gentle downhill climb back to the football pitch or along the street to the cable car.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
