Intro
Do you fancy a relaxed winter hike with views of the Säntis Mountain? The idyllic path takes you through open terrain, along the Sunnehalbriet. As it is a short trail, you have enough time to rest on one of the benches, stop at the Loipenkafi café or make a detour to the sulphur spring.
Description
This short winter hiking trail starts at the cross-country skiing car park Rietbad. From the very beginning, it opens up magnificent views of the Säntis, Silberplatten, Stöllen and Lütispitz mountains, which are bathed in an orange glow when the afternoon sun shines on the rocks.
First you walk through open terrain, past a few scattered fruit trees, towards Seeben. Once you have reached the elevation of the Stauffacher Hof working farm – where you can marvel at and buy beautiful gifts made from wood – the trail takes a turn and crosses a small bridge, leading to the other side of the Luteren stream. Accompanied by the gurgling sounds of the stream, the route on the southern slope takes you along the Sunnehalbriet, past old barns and traditional Toggenburg houses back to Rietbad.
If you don’t stop off en route, the round trip will take you approximately half an hour. It goes without saying that the «Loipenkafi» café also welcomes winter hikers to its sun terrace. A detour to the sulphur spring is worthwhile, too. For more than 500 years this spring provided the healing water for the spa hotel Kurhaus Rietbad and its baths, which were well-known throughout Switzerland – until the building burnt down in 1988. The spring was refurbished in 2016 and routed to the fountain at the Schwägalpstrasse Postbus stop. From here you can also visit the upper catchment of the spring (signposted «Schwefelquelle» – sulphur spring).
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
